Why Bamboo?

Bamboo is actually a member of the grass family and is one of the fastest-growing plants in the world. The fact that some species can grow around 91 centimeter in one single day means that bamboo is highly sustainable. There are other benefits too - bamboo is a strong plant and requires no chemicals like fertilizers or pesticides to grow. It also requires minimal water usage, especially in comparison to cotton. Bamboo plant doesn't steal from the soil and, instead, gives back nutrients into the earth. It also helps reducing CO2. Bamboo is also biodegradable, meaning that when its life span is over, it will break down without causing harm to the planet. It is a completely renewable resource.

Bamboo fiber is naturally smooth and round without chemical treatment such as softeners for wash machine, meaning that there are no sharp spurs to irritate the skin.

Types of Bamboo : Viscose and Lyocell

Bamboo lyocell is made from the bamboo plant, just like viscose; the difference is in processing the bamboo plant fibers into a usable textile. While viscose uses chemicals to treat bamboo and turn it into fabric, bamboo lyocell uses nontoxic solvents and undergoes a closed-loop process, making it more eco-friendly. Both of the processes don't leave any chemicals on the textile product, they are organic bamboo textile production methods.

Viscose is more cost effective as it requires less labor and usually used in towels and lyocell is more expensive but more suitable for clothing and bedding products.

The main argument against bamboo viscose is that the early stages of production process use chemicals to turn it from plant fiber into fabric. If these chemicals aren't correctly managed, there is the risk of chemical run off into the environment. While bamboo viscose (also known as bamboo rayon) and bamboo lyocell come from the bamboo plant and share many qualities, the difference really comes down to how the plant fibers are processed. Bamboo lyocell is a more sustainable solution as it doesn't use harsh chemicals and relies on a controlled closed-loop system.

100% Bamboo label

Products which are marketed as 100% bamboo can contain some other materials such as 5% spandex to make it more flexible or durable. This is more of a requirement for the production of the final product such as socks.
